Description

The Yasha Goby, *Stonogobiops yasha*, is a captivating and highly sought-after goby known for its striking coloration and fascinating symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp. Its body is primarily white with bold, vertical red bands, and it features an elongated, sail-like dorsal fin often tipped with black.

A minimum aquarium size of 10 gallons is recommended for a single Yasha Goby, though larger tanks are beneficial, especially if housing a pair or a symbiotic pistol shrimp. They require a sand bed of at least 2-3 inches for burrowing, particularly if kept with a pistol shrimp. Live rock provides additional hiding places and grazing opportunities. The Yasha Goby is a peaceful fish and an excellent candidate for reef aquariums, as it will not harm corals or invertebrates.

In the wild, Yasha Gobies form a symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp of the *Alpheus* genus. The shrimp maintains a burrow in the sand, providing shelter for both itself and the goby. The goby acts as a lookout, warning the shrimp of potential danger with a flick of its tail. This partnership is highly recommended for hobbyists looking to observe natural behaviors in their aquarium.

The Yasha Goby is a carnivore and its diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods. Offerings such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and other small frozen or live crustaceans are readily accepted. They should be fed multiple times a day.

Yasha Gobies typically reach a maximum size of about 2.5 inches in the aquarium. While sexing is difficult, they are known to form pairs and have been successfully bred in captivity, though it is considered challenging. There are no readily distinguishable visual differences between males and females.
