The Red Frogfish (Antennarius spp.) is a master of camouflage and an ambush predator prized by advanced marine aquarists and underwater photographers. Often appearing in vivid reds, oranges, or mottled patterns, this anglerfish uses a worm-like lure (esca) to draw prey within striking distance, swallowing victims whole in a lightning-fast gulp. Depending on species, adults reach 3–8 inches, perching on rock or sponge and “walking” with modified pectoral fins. In captivity, house a single frogfish in a species-only or predator FOWLR tank of 30–50+ gallons with stable parameters (SG 1.023–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, 74–78°F) and plenty of perches, caves, and low-to-moderate flow.
Feeding is the challenge and the fun: start with appropriate-sized live ghost shrimp or small fish, then tong-train to frozen/thawed silversides, shrimp, krill, and squid to avoid nutritional gaps. Frogfish will eat tankmates up to their own size and are not reef safe with small fish or ornamental crustaceans, though they usually ignore corals. Avoid aggressive tankmates and fast, nippy species.
