Description
The Chalice Coral is a broad trade name used for several closely related LPS corals prized for their intense coloration and unusual growth patterns. Depending on the variety, Chalice Corals may display combinations of green, orange, red, pink, blue, purple and yellow, often with brightly contrasting “eyes” across the colony.
Chalice Corals generally perform best under low to moderate lighting. Many specimens can become stressed or lose coloration under overly intense light, so gradual acclimation is recommended when moving them into brighter areas.
Provide low to moderate, indirect water flow. Enough movement should be present to keep debris from settling on the coral, but strong direct flow can prevent proper tissue expansion or damage the fleshy surface.
Although Chalice Corals receive much of their energy through photosynthesis, they can benefit from supplemental feeding. Small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood or quality coral foods may be offered periodically.
Chalice Corals can be highly aggressive toward neighboring corals. Many varieties extend sweeper tentacles after dark and are capable of damaging nearby colonies, so generous spacing should be provided.
With proper placement and stable reef conditions, Chalice Corals can slowly develop into impressive encrusting or plating colonies with exceptional color and contrast.
