Description

The Mystery Wrasse, *Pseudocheilinus ocellatus*, is a captivating and active addition to the reef aquarium. Its vibrant coloration, featuring a deep purple body with iridescent blue lines and a prominent black eyespot (ocellus) near the tail, makes it a striking focal point. This species is known for its quick movements and inquisitive nature, often darting in and out of rockwork.

A minimum tank size of 50 gallons is recommended for the Mystery Wrasse, providing ample space for swimming and exploring. They are native to the Indo-Pacific region and thrive in a well-established reef environment with plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. While generally peaceful towards most tank mates, they can be territorial with other wrasses, especially those of similar size or appearance. It is best to introduce them as the last fish in the aquarium.

In the aquarium, the Mystery Wrasse will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality marine flake food, pellet food, frozen mysis shrimp, and enriched brine shrimp. They are also known to actively hunt small invertebrates, which can be beneficial in controlling unwanted pests like pyramid snails. They typically reach a maximum size of around 4 inches in captivity. The Mystery Wrasse is considered to have an intermediate care level, requiring stable water parameters and a secure lid as they are known jumpers.
