Indigo Hamlet Fish

The Indigo Hamlet, *Hypoplectrus indigo*, is a striking and popular member of the Hamlet family, known for its vibrant and contrasting coloration. Its body is primarily a deep, rich indigo blue, dramatically offset by bright yellow fins and a yellow stripe running along the dorsal fin. This bold pattern makes it a standout in any marine aquarium.

A minimum tank size of 50 gallons is recommended for the Indigo Hamlet, providing ample space for swimming and establishing territories. They appreciate a well-aquascaped environment with plenty of live rock offering caves and crevices for hiding and exploring. While generally peaceful towards tankmates of a different body shape, they can be territorial towards other hamlets or similar-looking fish. They are considered reef safe with caution, as some individuals may nip at small ornamental shrimp or sessile invertebrates, though this is not a guaranteed behavior.

In the aquarium, the Indigo Hamlet typically reaches a size of around 4-5 inches. They are carnivorous and readily accept a varied diet of meaty foods. Offer a mix of high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other frozen preparations for marine carnivores. Feeding small, frequent meals throughout the day is beneficial.

Like other hamlets, the Indigo Hamlet is a synchronous hermaphrodite, meaning each individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs. While they can be bred in captivity, it is considered challenging for the home aquarist. There are no readily apparent visual differences between individuals.
