Description

The Blue Hippo Tang, *Paracanthurus hepatus*, is a vibrant and iconic fish instantly recognizable by its striking electric blue body, contrasting black markings, and bright yellow tail. Often referred to as the Regal Tang or Palette Surgeonfish, this species is a popular choice for larger marine aquariums due to its captivating appearance and active swimming behavior.

A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate their potential adult size of up to 12 inches in captivity. A well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding is essential for their well-being. While generally peaceful towards most tank mates, they can be territorial with other tangs, especially those of similar shape or color.

The Blue Hippo Tang is primarily an herbivore, and a varied diet is crucial for their health. They should be offered a mix of high-quality marine algae, such as spirulina and nori, along with frozen herbivore preparations. Supplementing their diet with occasional offerings of mysis shrimp or other meaty foods can also be beneficial. Providing a constant supply of algae on live rock or through algae clips will help mimic their natural grazing behavior.

While not typically bred in captivity by hobbyists, the Blue Hippo Tang is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning all individuals are born female and can transition to male later in life. There are no readily apparent visual differences between males and females. With proper care and a spacious environment, the Blue Hippo Tang can be a long-lived and rewarding addition to a large marine aquarium.
