The Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish, *Amphiprion ocellaris*, is a captivating and popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. This striking variant of the Ocellaris Clownfish displays a bold pattern of black and white bands, offering a sophisticated alternative to the more common orange and white coloration.
Reaching a maximum size of approximately 3 inches in the home aquarium, the Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish is well-suited for tanks as small as 20 gallons. A well-established aquarium with live rock providing ample hiding places is ideal. While they are famously known for their symbiotic relationship with anemones, they can thrive in an aquarium without one. If an anemone is introduced, ensure it is a species compatible with *Amphiprion ocellaris*, such as *Entacmaea quadricolor* (Bubble Tip Anemone) or *Heteractis magnifica* (Magnificent Sea Anemone).
The Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish is a peaceful and hardy species, making it an excellent addition to a community reef or fish-only aquarium. They are generally compatible with a wide variety of tank mates, provided the other inhabitants are not overly aggressive.
In the wild, *Amphiprion ocellaris* is a protandrous hermaphrodite, meaning all individuals are born male and can transition to female later in life. In an aquarium setting, a pair will form, with the larger, more dominant fish becoming the female. Breeding in captivity is relatively common and can be a rewarding experience for the dedicated hobbyist.
The Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish is an omnivore and readily accepts a varied diet. Offer a mix of high-quality marine flake and pellet foods, as well as frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. Supplementing their diet with marine algae or spirulina can also be beneficial. Feed small amounts multiple times a day.
