Description

The Bird Wrasse, *Gomphosus varius*, is a fascinating and active addition to a large, fish-only marine aquarium. Males are a vibrant blue-green with a long, pointed snout, while females are a mottled brown and white with a similar elongated mouth. This unique beak-like mouth is used to probe crevices and sand for invertebrates.

A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and a deep sand bed (at least 3-4 inches) for burrowing at night or when startled. Live rock with plenty of hiding places is also essential. The Bird Wrasse is not considered reef safe as it will prey on small invertebrates, including snails, crabs, and ornamental shrimp.

In the aquarium, the Bird Wrasse is a carnivore and should be offered a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. They are active hunters and will readily accept food offered in the water column.

Bird Wrasses can reach a size of up to 10 inches in captivity. They are generally peaceful towards other fish of similar size but can be aggressive towards smaller, passive species. They are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning all are born female and can change to male later in life. Breeding in captivity is extremely rare.
