The Adorned Wrasse, Halichoeres cosmetus, is a vibrant and active species that brings a splash of color to the marine aquarium. This beautiful wrasse is characterized by its striking coloration, which typically includes shades of red, orange, and purple, often with intricate patterns and markings that give it its "adorned" name. The intensity and specific patterns can vary between individuals and with maturity.
A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for the Adorned Wrasse to provide ample swimming space and a stable environment. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, they are well-suited to a reef aquarium setting with plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. They are considered to have an intermediate care level, requiring good water quality and a varied diet.
In the aquarium, the Adorned Wrasse is a carnivorous species that will readily accept a diet of high-quality marine flake food, pellet food, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. Feeding multiple times a day is beneficial to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. They are generally peaceful towards other fish but can be territorial with conspecifics or other similar-looking wrasses, especially in smaller tanks. They are typically reef-safe and will not bother corals or invertebrates.
