Description
Description
The Large Male Coral Cat Shark (Atelomycterus marmoratus) is a beautifully patterned, bottom-dwelling shark prized for its mottled brown, cream, and gray markings and graceful swimming style along the sandbed. Reaching an impressive adult size, this large male specimen is best suited for experienced marine aquarists with a spacious, mature aquarium designed specifically for sharks.
Coral Cat Sharks are generally calm but predatory, spending much of their time resting on the bottom or slowly cruising the tank. They do best with peaceful, larger tankmates that will not nip at their fins and are too large to be viewed as prey. Avoid small fish, ornamental crustaceans, and invertebrates that may be eaten. A tight-fitting lid is a must, as sharks are powerful and can dislodge loose covers.
Provide a wide footprint with plenty of open sandbed and smooth, rounded rockwork to prevent abrasions. Fine sand substrate is highly recommended to protect the shark’s belly and pectoral fins. Strong biological filtration, stable water parameters, and high oxygenation are critical for long-term success, especially with a large, active predator like this.
Offer a varied, meaty diet including fresh or frozen marine foods such as shrimp, squid, clam, krill, and pieces of marine fish. Target feeding with tongs near the bottom helps ensure your Coral Cat Shark receives its share without causing excessive waste or competition with tankmates.
