Description
Description
The Large Epaulette Shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) is a striking, bottom-dwelling species prized for its bold “epaulette” spots and calm, deliberate movements. Best suited for experienced marine keepers, this shark thrives in a large, mature aquarium with plenty of open sandbed for cruising and smooth rockwork to prevent injury.
Epaulette Sharks are generally docile and can be kept with other peaceful, larger tankmates that won’t nip at their fins or outcompete them for food. Avoid aggressive species and any small fish or invertebrates that may be viewed as prey. A secure, covered aquarium is essential, as sharks are strong and can dislodge loose lids.
Offer a varied, meaty diet including fresh or frozen shrimp, squid, clam, silversides, and other marine-based foods. Target feeding with tongs near the bottom helps ensure your Epaulette receives its share without excess waste. Stable water parameters, strong biological filtration, and excellent oxygenation are crucial for long-term success.

With the proper environment and dedicated care, the Large Epaulette Shark becomes an impressive centerpiece that adds truly unique personality and motion to a large marine system.
