Description
Description
This Extra Large Snowflake Eel (Echidna nebulosa) is a true standout, with its creamy white body, bold black patches, and yellow “snowflake” markings along the head and face. At this size, it’s not a shy little addition – it’s a centerpiece fish with tons of personality that will quickly become the star of your tank.
Snowflake Eels are known for being hardy and relatively forgiving compared to many other morays, which is why they’re so popular. They spend much of their time tucked into rockwork with just their head peeking out, watching what’s happening and waiting for feeding time. As they grow larger, they become stronger and more curious, so a secure, tight-fitting lid is a must – eels are excellent escape artists.
Tankmates need to be chosen with care. While Snowflake Eels are often considered one of the “friendlier” morays, they are still predators. Small fish and especially crustaceans (shrimp, crabs, etc.) are very likely to end up as food. They do best with medium to large, confident fish that are too big to be swallowed and comfortable in a tank with a predator.
Feeding is simple and fun if you’re prepared. Offer a varied, meaty diet of frozen shrimp, squid, clam, krill, and pieces of marine fish. Using feeding tongs is strongly recommended to avoid accidental bites and to ensure the eel gets its share without overfeeding the tank. Stable water parameters, plenty of rock caves, and good filtration will keep this eel happy and active for years.
