Description

The Brazilian Gold Moray Eel is a stunning regional variant of the Goldentail Moray, showing off warm yellow and gold tones against a speckled body that really pops under reef lighting. Smaller than the giant morays but full of attitude and personality, this eel quickly becomes the fish you look for every time you walk past the tank.

Most of the day, you’ll find it tucked into rockwork with just its head sticking out, watching what’s going on and waiting for feeding time. As it settles in, it becomes bolder and more visible, often using the same favorite cave or tunnel. A tank with plenty of solid rock structures and caves is a must so it can feel secure and establish a territory.

Like all morays, the Brazilian Gold is a predator. Small fish and especially crustaceans (shrimp, crabs, etc.) are viewed as food, so tankmates should be medium to large, confident fish that are clearly too big to be swallowed. Avoid very aggressive species that might harass the eel or outcompete it at feeding time. Make sure the tank has a tight-fitting lid – morays are famous escape artists and can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps.

Feeding is straightforward once it’s acclimated. Offer a varied, meaty diet of frozen shrimp, squid, silversides, fish strips, and other marine-based foods. Feeding with tongs is strongly recommended: it keeps your fingers safe and lets you place food right where the eel is waiting. Good filtration, stable water parameters, and plenty of oxygen will help this eel thrive for many years.
