Description
Description
The Blue Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita) is one of the most eye-catching fish you can add to a saltwater aquarium. With its electric blue body, bright yellow accents, and long, flowing ribbon-like shape, it looks almost unreal. This is the eel people stop and stare at – but it’s also one of the most demanding species in the hobby and is best reserved for very experienced aquarists.
Blue Ribbon Eels are shy, cave-dwelling ambush predators that spend much of their time with just their head sticking out of a burrow or rock crevice. They are notorious escape artists and will make use of any opening they can find, so a tight-fitting, well-sealed lid is absolutely required. Provide plenty of rockwork, caves, and deep sand or rubble areas where the eel can create a secure hide.
The biggest challenge with this species is feeding. Many Blue Ribbon Eels initially refuse prepared foods and may only respond to live offerings at first. Even once they start eating, they can be very picky and may go on hunger strikes. You should be prepared to spend time target feeding with tongs and working patiently to transition them to frozen marine foods such as silversides, shrimp, and small strips of fish.
Tankmates should be peaceful and not overly boisterous. Avoid aggressive fish that might harass or outcompete the eel at feeding time, as well as any small fish or shrimp that could be viewed as prey. Stable, excellent water quality, plenty of oxygenation, and minimal stress are key to any chance of long-term success with this species.

The Blue Ribbon Eel is one of the most beautiful marine fish available, but it is also one of the most challenging to keep. For aquarists with the experience, patience, and equipment to meet its needs, it can become a breathtaking, unforgettable centerpiece – but it should never be treated as a beginner or “impulse” purchase.
