Squirrelfish (Holocentridae family) are brilliantly colored nocturnal reef fish known for their large eyes, red-and-silver scales, and spiny dorsal fins. Native to tropical and subtropical waters around the Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Red Sea, these fish are commonly found hiding in reef crevices during the day and emerging at night to feed on small crustaceans and plankton. Reaching 6–12 inches depending on the species, popular aquarium varieties include the Longspine Squirrelfish (Holocentrus rufus) and the Striped Squirrelfish (Sargocentron xantherythrum). In home aquariums, squirrelfish thrive in fish-only or FOWLR systems of 75 gallons or more, with ample rockwork, caves, and subdued lighting to mimic their natural nocturnal habitat.

Squirrelfish are carnivorous and prefer a meaty diet consisting of mysis shrimp, krill, chopped squid, and other marine-based foods. They are generally peaceful toward non-aggressive tankmates but may prey on very small fish or shrimp. Because they’re sensitive to bright light and sudden movements, low-stress environments with stable water conditions (SG 1.023–1.025, pH 8.1–8.4, 74–80°F) are ideal.
