The Pakistan Butterflyfish (Chaetodon collare), also known as the Redtail Butterflyfish or Collare Butterflyfish, is an elegant and hardy marine species native to the Indian Ocean, ranging from the Maldives to Indonesia and the Arabian Sea near Pakistan. This butterflyfish is admired for its distinctive appearance—an intricate pattern of fine scales giving a net-like effect across the body, a rich brown coloration, and a bright red tail fin that provides a stunning contrast. Peaceful by nature, the Pakistan Butterflyfish is often seen in pairs around coral reefs, feeding on small invertebrates and coral polyps. Its beauty, resilience, and adaptability make it a popular choice for both display aquariums and reef enthusiasts.
Caring for Pakistan Butterflyfish in Aquariums
Keeping a Chaetodon collare healthy in captivity requires a spacious, well-established saltwater aquarium of at least 100 gallons with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. This species thrives in stable marine conditions, preferring temperatures between 74–82°F, a pH of 8.1–8.4, and excellent water quality. Although semi-reef safe, the Pakistan Butterflyfish may nip at soft corals or polyps, so it’s best suited for fish-only or carefully planned reef tanks. Providing a diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods will help maintain their vivid coloration and overall health. With proper care, the Pakistan Butterflyfish becomes a striking centerpiece in any saltwater aquarium, combining exotic charm with graceful movement.
