Neon Wrasse

The Neon Wrasse, also known as the Yellowhead Wrasse, is a striking and dynamic addition to any saltwater aquarium. Its vivid appearance evolves as it matures—juveniles display a bright yellow body accented by a bold turquoise stripe, while adults develop a golden-yellow head, blue underside, and a distinct black patch extending from behind the pectoral fin to the upper tail. These dramatic color changes make the Neon Wrasse both captivating and easy to identify in any stage of life.

Native to the Western Atlantic, this wrasse is commonly found on coral reefs and rocky ledges from Bermuda and Florida down to Brazil. It thrives in both shallow and deeper reef environments, where it plays an active role in the ecosystem.

For best care, house the Neon Wrasse in a marine aquarium of at least 75 gallons, with secure lids to prevent escape. A natural aquascape with plenty of live rock will give it places to hide and explore, while open areas of sand and swimming space help mimic its wild habitat. A soft sand bed of 2–3 inches is crucial, as the Neon Wrasse sleeps buried in the sand at night or when alarmed.

While generally peaceful with other fish, the Neon Wrasse can become territorial with its own kind. It's best kept as a single specimen or in a large system with other non-aggressive wrasses.
