The Asfur Angelfish (Pomacanthus asfur), also known as the Arabian Angelfish or Crescent Angelfish, is a spectacular marine species native to the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean. This large, majestic angelfish is easily recognized by its deep blue body, bright yellow crescent band, and yellow tail—making it one of the most visually stunning saltwater fish available for home aquariums. In the wild, Asfur Angelfish inhabit coral reefs and rocky lagoons, where they feed on sponges, tunicates, and algae. Their regal coloration and graceful swimming patterns make them a prized centerpiece for advanced marine aquarists seeking a truly exotic show fish.
Caring for Asfur Angelfish in Aquariums
Keeping a Pomacanthus asfur healthy in captivity requires a large, mature marine aquarium of at least 180 gallons, with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. This species prefers stable water parameters—temperatures between 74–82°F, salinity of 1.020–1.025, and a pH of 8.1–8.4. While generally hardy once acclimated, the Asfur Angelfish can be territorial and is best housed alone or with compatible tankmates in a peaceful saltwater setup. A balanced diet of marine algae, high-quality angelfish pellets, and frozen sponge-based foods will keep their colors vibrant. With proper care, the Asfur Angelfish becomes a long-lived, breathtaking addition to any luxury reef or fish-only marine aquarium.
