Description
The Long Tentacle Plate Coral (Heliofungia actiniformis) is one of the most distinctive large-polyp stony corals available in the reef aquarium hobby. Its exceptionally long, flowing tentacles can give it an anemone-like appearance while adding constant movement to the aquarium.
Unlike many corals, Heliofungia should generally be placed directly on the sand bed rather than on rockwork. Its fleshy tissue expands considerably beyond the skeleton and can easily become damaged against sharp rocks. An open area with plenty of room for expansion is ideal.
Moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect water flow are recommended. Excessively strong flow can prevent the coral from fully expanding and may cause tissue damage.
Long Tentacle Plate Corals receive much of their energy through photosynthesis but benefit greatly from supplemental feeding. Small pieces of mysis shrimp, krill, finely chopped seafood and other meaty marine foods can be offered periodically.
This coral should be given plenty of space from neighboring corals. Its long tentacles can extend well beyond the skeleton and may sting nearby inhabitants.
XLG specimens are particularly impressive when fully expanded and can quickly become one of the main focal points of a reef display.
