Store-Ready Summary

The Favites Coral is a hardy and colorful LPS coral featuring tightly packed polyps and an attractive brain-like growth pattern. Available in a wide variety of colors, Favites are excellent additions to established reef aquariums and can develop into impressive colonies with proper care.

Description

The Favites Coral is a popular large-polyp stony coral prized for its bold coloration, distinctive texture and relatively forgiving care requirements. Colonies typically develop a rounded or encrusting growth form with neighboring polyps sharing skeletal walls, creating the classic brain coral appearance.

Favites generally thrive under low to moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow. Flow should be strong enough to prevent debris from settling on the colony while remaining gentle enough to allow the fleshy polyps to fully expand.

While Favites receive much of their nutrition through photosynthesis, they readily accept supplemental foods. Occasional target feeding with mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood or quality LPS coral foods can help encourage growth and healthy tissue development.

Favites can be aggressive toward neighboring corals and may extend sweeper tentacles after the lights go out. Provide adequate spacing between the colony and surrounding corals to prevent stinging and tissue damage.

With stable water parameters and proper placement, Favites can be a hardy, colorful and long-lasting addition to a wide variety of reef aquariums.

Recommended Water Parameters:
Temperature: 75–80°F
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–11 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm

Please Note: Coloration, growth pattern and polyp appearance can vary considerably between individual Favites species and specimens. Provide adequate space from neighboring corals due to its aggressive sweeper tentacles.
